Suhoor and iftar

The Prophet ﷺ taught us to eat suhoor before dawn and to break the fast quickly at sunset.

“Eat suhoor, for in suhoor there is blessing.”

📚 Anas ibn Malik · Sahih al-Bukhari 1923; Sahih Muslim 1095

Even a little food or a sip of water at suhoor follows the Sunnah.

“People will remain upon goodness as long as they hasten to break the fast.”

📚 Sahl ibn Sa'd · Sahih al-Bukhari 1957; Sahih Muslim 1098

When the sun has set, we break the fast straight away, with dates or water if we can.

A good iftar

  • Break the fast with a date, or water if there is no date.
  • Say the dua for breaking the fast (below).
  • Pray Maghrib, then eat your meal.
  • Share: inviting someone to iftar or giving food brings great reward.
