The farewell pilgrimage
In the tenth year after the Hijrah the Prophet ﷺ made Hajj with over a hundred thousand Muslims, and soon after he passed away.
At Arafah, the Prophet ﷺ gave his farewell sermon: he taught that the lives, wealth and honour of people are sacred, that all people are equal except in taqwa, and he asked people to be good to women. Then this ayah was revealed:
The religion completed
In the middle of this ayah: today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and chosen Islam as your religion.
A few months later, in Rabi' al-Awwal of the eleventh year after the Hijrah, the Prophet ﷺ passed away in Madinah, aged sixty-three. Abu Bakr reminded the people: whoever worshipped Muhammad, Muhammad has died; whoever worships Allah, Allah is Ever-Living.
