Letters at the start of surahs
29 surahs of the Qur'an begin with separate letters, such as Alif Laam Meem at the start of Surah Al-Baqarah. They are called Huroof Muqatta'aat (the separated letters). Only Allah knows their full meaning. We read them by their names, and some names are stretched long (you will learn why in the Madd lesson).
The 14 letters used
Only these 14 letters appear: ا ل م ص ر ك ه ي ع ط س ح ق ن.
