🌙 Level 1: The letters
Letters that look alike New
Many letters share a shape and differ only by their dots. Learn to spot the difference.
In this lesson you will
- Tell letters apart by the number and place of their dots
- Read mixed-up letters without looking at their names

Same shape, different dots
Look at the dots: how many, and are they above or below? That is often the only difference.
One shape, three letters
One dot below, two dots above, three dots above.
The 'Jeem' family
One dot inside, no dot, one dot above.
Pairs
In each pair, the second letter has dot(s) above.
Faa and Qaaf
Faa has one dot; Qaaf has two dots and a rounder, deeper tail.
Noon and Yaa at the start of a word
At the start or in the middle of a word, Noon and Yaa lose their bowls and look just like Baa, Taa and Thaa: one dot above is Noon, two dots below is Yaa.
Kaaf and Laam
Both are tall. Laam is a plain tall stick with a hook at the bottom. Kaaf has a little mark (like a small Hamzah) inside it, or a slanted top when it starts a word.
