🎙️ Tajweed: recite beautifully · Step 1 of 11
What is tajweed?
Tajweed means reciting each letter correctly, giving it its due. It is how the Qur'an was taught to the Prophet ﷺ.
Reciting as it was revealed
The Qur'an was recited to the Prophet ﷺ by Jibreel, and the Prophet ﷺ taught it to his Companions exactly as he heard it. Tajweed is the set of rules that describes that recitation, so we can read the way it was taught.
Mistakes are of two kinds:
- Clear mistakes (lahn jali): changing a letter or a vowel, which can change the meaning. Every reader must avoid these.
- Hidden mistakes (lahn khafi): missing finer rules such as the length of a madd or a ghunnah. We work to improve these with a teacher.
Recite it slowly and clearly
Allah tells the Prophet ﷺ to recite the Qur'an with tarteel: slowly, clearly and well.
“The one who is skilled with the Qur'an will be with the noble and obedient scribes (the angels), and the one who recites the Qur'an and stumbles over it, finding it hard, will have two rewards.”
Every step of learning is rewarded. Keep going!
