Prophet Adam (AS): The First Human

Ages 5–9 Story 1 of 30

Long ago, before there were any people, Allah told the angels, "I am going to place a new creation on the earth." Allah made Adam from clay and gave him life. Then Allah taught Adam the names of everything: the trees, the animals, the rivers and the stars.

Allah asked the angels to tell Him the names of these things. The angels said, "We only know what You have taught us." Then Adam told them every name. Allah commanded the angels to bow to Adam out of respect, and they all did. But Iblis refused. "I am better than him," he said proudly. "You made me from fire and him from clay." Because of his pride, Iblis became Shaytan, and he promised to try to lead people away from Allah.

Adam and his wife, Hawwa, lived in Jannah, a beautiful garden. They could eat from every tree except one. Shaytan whispered to them again and again, and in the end they ate from that tree. At once they felt ashamed and covered themselves with leaves.

But Adam and Hawwa did not blame anyone else. They turned to Allah and said, "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will be among the losers." Allah, the Most Merciful, forgave them. Then He sent them to live on the earth, the home of all their children, which means all of us.
