The Children of Isra'il were being attacked by a powerful enemy led by a giant warrior named Jalut. They asked for a king to lead them, and Allah chose Talut, a man with knowledge and strength.
Talut led his army out. On the way they came to a river. Talut said, "Allah is testing you. Whoever drinks from it is not with me, except a single handful." Most of the soldiers drank their fill. Only a small group obeyed.
When the small group saw Jalut's enormous army, some of them were afraid. But the ones with strong faith said, "How many times has a small group beaten a big army by Allah's permission!" They made dua: Rabbana afrigh 'alayna sabran wa thabbit aqdamana, "Our Lord, pour patience on us and make our feet firm."
In the battle, a young man named Dawud defeated Jalut, and the believers won. Allah later made Dawud a king and a prophet. He gave him the Zabur (the Psalms) and a beautiful voice. When Dawud praised Allah, the mountains and the birds praised Allah with him. Allah also made iron soft in his hands, so he could make strong armour to protect people.
