The Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful

Two names from one root: r-ḥ-m, mercy.

Word by word

ar-Raḥmān: the Most Merciful, whose mercy covers everything.

ar-Raḥīm: the Especially Merciful, giving mercy again and again.

“Allah said: I am ar-Raḥmān. I created the womb (raḥim) and gave it a name taken from My name. Whoever keeps ties with it, I keep ties with him.”

📚 'Abd ar-Rahman ibn 'Awf · Sunan Abi Dawud 1694; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1907
