🏮 Ramadan and the Islamic year · Step 7 of 10

Hajj, the ten days and Eid al-Adha

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are the best days of the year: Hajj, the day of Arafah and the sacrifice.

Hajj

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam: once in a lifetime, every adult Muslim who is able travels to Makkah in Dhul Hijjah. The pilgrims stand at Arafah, remember Ibrahim and his family, and worship Allah together, all dressed simply and equally.

“There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these days”, meaning the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.

📚 Ibn 'Abbas · Sahih al-Bukhari 969; Sunan Abi Dawud 2438

Fasting the day of Arafah: “I hope from Allah that it expiates the year before it and the year after it.”

📚 Abu Qatadah · Sahih Muslim 1162

Those not on Hajj are encouraged to fast on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah.

Eid al-Adha

On the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, Muslims pray the Eid prayer and those who can sacrifice an animal (qurbani), remembering the obedience of Prophet Ibrahim. The meat is shared with family, friends and the poor. The dua for the sacrifice is in the Duas course.
