Soft letters
Leen means 'soft'. When Waaw or Yaa has a sukoon and the letter before it has a Fatḥah, they glide softly:
- بَوْ 'baw' (like ow in bow-wow, but short)
- بَيْ 'bay' (like ay in bay)
Compare with Madd: after Ḍammah Waaw is a long 'oo' (بُو); after Fatḥah it is the soft 'aw' (بَوْ).
Madd or Leen?
Look at the vowel before the Waaw or Yaa.
