Three letters that stretch
Madd means 'stretching'. Three letters stretch the vowel before them for two counts:
- Alif after a Fatḥah: بَا 'baa'
- Waaw after a Ḍammah: بُو 'boo'
- Yaa after a Kasrah: بِي 'bee'
The Madd letter itself is not said as a separate sound; it only makes the vowel longer. Indo-Pak Qur'ans and the Qaida put a sukoon on the Waaw and Yaa; the Madinah Mushaf leaves them without one.
