Small letters are long
In the Qur'an some long vowels are written with a small letter. Read them long, for two counts:
- بٰ a small Alif above the letter (standing Fatḥah, khaṛā zabar): 'baa'
- بِۦ a small Yaa after a Kasrah: 'bee'
- بُۥ a small Waaw after a Ḍammah: 'boo'
The small Alif is very common, for example in ذٰلِكَ 'dhaa-li-ka'. The small Yaa and Waaw mostly come after the Haa of 'him': بِهِۦ 'bi-hee', لَهُۥ 'la-hoo'.
Indo-Pak Qur'ans draw the last two as a standing Kasrah (khaṛī zer) and an upside-down Ḍammah (ulṭā pesh); they are read the same.
