Natural Madd and the Madd sign
A normal long vowel (بَا بُو بِي) is stretched 2 counts. This is the natural Madd.
When a wavy sign (ـٓ) is written above the Madd letter, stretch it longer. The common cases are:
Types of Madd
| Type | When | How long | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
Connected (Muttaṣil) | Hamzah comes after the Madd letter in the same word | 4–5 counts | جَآءَ السَّمَآءُ |
Separated (Munfaṣil) | Hamzah comes at the start of the next word | 4–5 counts (2 in some readings) | يَآ أَيُّهَا |
Necessary (Laazim) | A shaddah or sukoon comes after the Madd letter | 6 counts | دَآبَّةٌ الضَّآلِّيْنَ |
