📏 Level 7: Tajweed basics
Joining words and silent letters New
Some letters are written but not read: the Alif of 'al' in the middle of a sentence, the Alif after 'oo' at the end of a verb, and a few others.
In this lesson you will
- Join words across a silent Alif (Hamzat al-Wasl)
- Skip letters that have no mark at all

The joining Alif
Some words start with an Alif that is only read at the start of reading. In the middle of a sentence it is skipped, and the words join: بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ is 'bis-mil-laa-hi', not 'bismi al-laahi'.
In the Qur'an on this site (the Madinah print) this Alif has a small 'ṣ' on top: ٱ. That mark tells you to skip it. (Indo-Pak prints write a plain ا with no vowel mark instead.)
Joining
Letters with no mark are silent
A letter with no vowel and no sukoon is not read. The most common one is the Alif after the Waaw at the end of verbs like قَالُوا 'qaa-loo'.
