Adhan, Witr and Janaazah

The adhan and its answer, the Qunoot duas of Witr, the funeral prayer and burial.

  1. The adhan (call to prayer)

Called before each of the five prayers.

    al-laa-hu ak-bar, al-laa-hu ak-bar (2 times); ash-ha-du al-laa i-laa-ha il-lal-laah (2 times); ash-ha-du an-na mu-ḥam-ma-dar ra-soo-lul-laah (2 times); ḥay-ya 'a-laṣ ṣa-laah (2 times); ḥay-ya 'a-lal fa-laaḥ (2 times); al-laa-hu ak-bar, al-laa-hu ak-bar; laa i-laa-ha il-lal-laah

“Allah is the Greatest. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Come to the prayer. Come to success. Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah.”

In the Fajr adhan, after the second ḥay-ya 'a-lal fa-laaḥ, say twice: الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِّنَ النَّوْمِ (aṣ-ṣa-laa-tu khay-rum mi-nan nawm): prayer is better than sleep (Sunan Abi Dawud 500). The iqaamah is said just before the prayer starts and adds قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ (qad qaa-ma-tiṣ ṣa-laah); ask your teacher how your school says it.

  2. Answering the adhan

    While you hear the adhan.

    laa ḥaw-la wa laa quw-wa-ta il-laa bil-laah

“There is no power and no strength except with Allah.”

Repeat each phrase quietly after the caller, except at ḥay-ya 'a-laṣ ṣa-laah and ḥay-ya 'a-lal fa-laaḥ, where you say this instead. Then send salawaat on the Prophet ﷺ and say the dua after the adhan.

  3. Du'aa al-Qunoot in Witr (Hanafi)

In the third rak'ah of Witr, before rukoo', in the Hanafi school.

    al-laa-hum-ma in-naa nas-ta-'ee-nu-ka wa nas-tagh-fi-ru-ka wa nu'-mi-nu bi-ka wa na-ta-wak-ka-lu 'a-lay-ka wa nuth-nee 'a-lay-kal khay-ra wa nash-ku-ru-ka wa laa nak-fu-ru-ka wa nakh-la-'u wa nat-ru-ku may-yaf-ju-ruk, al-laa-hum-ma iy-yaa-ka na'-bu-du wa la-ka nu-ṣal-lee wa nas-ju-du wa i-lay-ka nas-'aa wa naḥ-fi-du wa nar-joo raḥ-ma-ta-ka wa nakh-shaa 'a-dhaa-ba-ka in-na 'a-dhaa-ba-ka bil-kuf-faa-ri mul-ḥiq

“O Allah, we ask Your help and Your forgiveness, we believe in You, we rely on You and praise You with good. We thank You and are not ungrateful to You, and we leave whoever disobeys You. O Allah, You alone we worship, to You we pray and prostrate, to You we hurry and serve. We hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment; Your punishment will surely reach the disbelievers.”

  4. Du'aa al-Qunoot taught to al-Ḥasan

In Witr (and in Fajr in the Shafi'i school).

    al-laa-hum-mah-di-nee fee-man ha-dayt, wa 'aa-fi-nee fee-man 'aa-fayt, wa ta-wal-la-nee fee-man ta-wal-layt, wa baa-rik lee fee-maa a'-ṭayt, wa qi-nee shar-ra maa qa-ḍayt, fa-in-na-ka taq-ḍee wa laa yuq-ḍaa 'a-layk, wa in-na-hoo laa ya-dhil-lu maw-waa-layt, ta-baa-rak-ta rab-ba-naa wa ta-'aa-layt

“O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, keep me well among those You have kept well, take care of me among those You take care of, bless what You have given me, and protect me from the harm of what You have decreed. You decide and nothing is decided over You. Whoever You befriend is never humbled. Blessed and exalted are You, our Lord.”

  5. Janaazah prayer: for an adult

After the third takbeer of the funeral prayer.

    al-laa-hum-magh-fir li-ḥay-yi-naa wa may-yi-ti-naa wa shaa-hi-di-naa wa ghaa-'i-bi-naa wa ṣa-ghee-ri-naa wa ka-bee-ri-naa wa dha-ka-ri-naa wa un-thaa-naa, al-laa-hum-ma man aḥ-yay-ta-hoo min-naa fa-aḥ-yi-hee 'a-lal is-laam, wa man ta-waf-fay-ta-hoo min-naa fa-ta-waf-fa-hoo 'a-lal ee-maan

“O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our men and our women. O Allah, whoever of us You keep alive, keep alive on Islam, and whoever of us You take, take with faith.”

  6. Janaazah prayer: for a child

After the third takbeer, when the deceased is a child.

    al-laa-hum-maj-'al-hu la-naa fa-ra-ṭaw waj-'al-hu la-naa aj-raw wa dhukh-raw waj-'al-hu la-naa shaa-fi-'aw wa mu-shaf-fa-'aa

“O Allah, make him go before us to prepare for us, make him a reward and a treasure for us, and make him one who intercedes for us and whose intercession is accepted.”

    For a girl say

  7. Placing the deceased in the grave

When laying the body in the grave.

    bis-mil-laa-hi wa 'a-laa mil-la-ti ra-soo-lil-laah

“In the name of Allah, and on the way of the Messenger of Allah.”

  8. The Prophet's ﷺ dua near death

When death is near; and to remind the dying person.

    al-laa-hum-magh-fir lee war-ḥam-nee wa al-ḥiq-nee bir-ra-fee-qil a'-laa

“O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, and join me with the highest companions.”

Gently remind someone who is dying to say لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ (laa i-laa-ha il-lal-laah) (Sahih Muslim 916).

These duas are being checked by teachers. The English pronunciation is a guide: learn the exact sounds by listening.

The meanings are explained in simple words for learners, not a word-for-word translation. For the full meaning of the Qur'an, read an established translation, such as Saheeh International in English or Maulana Muhammad Junagarhi in Urdu.
