The People of the Cave

Ages 6–10 Story 26 of 30

Long ago, in a town where people worshipped idols, there lived some young men who believed only in Allah. The king and the people were angry with anyone who worshipped Allah, so the young men left the town together to keep their faith safe.

They found a cave in the mountains and went inside. They made dua: Rabbana atina min ladunka rahmah, wa hayyi' lana min amrina rashada, "Our Lord, give us mercy from You and guide us rightly in our situation."

Allah made them fall into a deep sleep. The sun moved away from the cave as it rose and set, so it never burned them. Allah turned them from side to side as they slept, and their dog lay stretched out at the entrance with its front paws forward. Anyone who looked in would have been frightened away.

They slept for 309 years! When they woke up, they thought they had slept for a day or part of a day. They were hungry, so they sent one of them into town with a silver coin to buy food, telling him to be careful. But the town had completely changed. The coin was centuries old, and the people now believed in Allah. Their story became a sign that Allah can bring people back to life.

People later argued about how many young men there were. Allah says only He knows exactly. He also teaches us in this surah to say "In sha' Allah" (if Allah wills) whenever we say we will do something tomorrow.
