Two letters in one
Shaddah (also called tashdeed) looks like a small 'w' ـّ above a letter: بّ. It means the letter is doubled: the first time with sukoon (joined to the letter before), the second time with the vowel that comes with the shaddah.
رَبْ + بَ = رَبَّ 'rab-ba'. Press on the doubled letter a little.
Shaddah with a vowel
A Fatḥah or Ḍammah is written above the shaddah. A Kasrah goes below the letter in the Qaida and in Indo-Pak copies of the Qur'an; the Madinah Mushaf puts it just under the shaddah instead.
