Two ways to read 'the'
The word al (ال) means 'the'. How you read it depends on the letter after it:
- Moon letters: the Laam has a sukoon and is said: الْقَمَرُ 'al-qa-ma-ru' (the moon).
- Sun letters: the Laam has no mark and is silent; the next letter has a shaddah: الشَّمْسُ 'ash-sham-su' (the sun).
At the very start of reading, the Alif is said as 'a'. In the middle of a sentence it is silent (see the next lesson).
