Idgham: merging the noon

Before the letters of 'yarmaloon', the noon saakin or tanween merges into the next letter, with or without ghunnah.

The rule

The six letters of idgham are ي ر م ل و ن (remember yarmaloon).

  • With ghunnah before ي ن م و: the noon disappears into the next letter, which is held with a nasal sound for two counts.
  • Without ghunnah before ل ر: the noon disappears completely into the ل or ر.

Idgham only happens between two words. Inside one word (as in دُنْيَا) the noon stays clear.

With ghunnah

Noon saakin into ي, with ghunnah.

Tanween into و, with ghunnah.

Without ghunnah

Tanween into ر: no ghunnah.

Tanween into ل: no ghunnah.
